Currently, the best friend and I are sitting on a balcony at Tybee Island, watching a storm roll through. It cancelled our previous plans of going on a sunset dolphin cruise. So, we’re trying to decide what to do with our evening as we watch the storm.
It’s quite beautiful, this storm. Don’t get me wrong, there is lightening all around, heavy rains, strong winds – all of which could be dangerous. But there is also magnificent power and awesome beauty in the midst.
Of course, this got me to thinking about the storms we face in life. I believe that, in every storm, there is power and beauty to be found. It has been when storms have raged all around me that I have most clearly seen the awesomeness of my God. In financial storms, I have seen God use His power to change my situation and I’ve seen the beauty of people, directed by Him, who have stepped forward to help. In those times when sadness would overwhelm me, I have felt the power of God’s love. In loneliness, I have basked in the precious promise that Jesus will never leave me or forsake me.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” There was a time that I chafed against that verse. I couldn’t understand why God would instruct to be thankful in hard times. Now, I understand that thankfulness helps open our eyes to the beauty we may have missed before. Sure, we missed the dolphin cruise, but we saw a spectacular storm and it opened our evening up for some other adventure. I am thankful.
So. What about you? Are you able to thank God, despite your circumstances? I know it’s hard to say thank you when you’re dodging lightening bolts, but I promise God will meet you in it and bless you in a way you could never expect. Give it a try. I trust that God won’t let you down.
Be blessed and tell someone you love them.
